About the exhibition:

The exploitation of fossil fuels has allowed us the dream of flying, the freedom of the open road, a consume-craze, a plastic wonderland, and a comfortable warm apartment. Our use of petroleum, heating oil, natural gas can also be seen as a drug problem.
We use this state-sanctioned fossil drug with all its side effects of CO2 and environmental destruction. Coming clean from this drug causes withdrawal symptoms and all the irrationalities that go along with them. One need only look at the reader’s comments about ideas for a speed limit of 30km/h in the city or 130km/h on the highway. A recognition of the disease is lacking – rational reasoning gives way to addiction-led blindness.

How do artists see our fossil addiction and its therapy? How do we recognize the addiction? Where does it show itself? How could withdrawal therapy for citizens and the state look? We would like to explore answers to these questions.

Participating artists: Tom Albrecht, Jörn Birkholz, Stephan Groß, Marina Camargo, Björn Fischer/Elisabeth-Marie Leistikow/Richard Millig/Maren Schwier, Sabine Janz, Maria Korporal, Merav Leibkuechler, Steph Marx, Christoph Medicus, Jasmin Odendahl, Katja Struif

Tree Travelling on the Motorway – an interactive installation by Maria Korporal

About the exhibition:

The individual starts building insect hotels, cultivating bees in the city, gardening urbanly. Citizens measure their ecological footprint. Renewable energies and organic farming are increasing. Climate protection agreements are being made worldwide.

But the reversal happens too slowly. Today, islands sink, climate refugees come, weather extremes increase, species die, heavy rain floods. Scientists warn. The young generation demonstrates for real climate protection. The governing politics does not move. The German government wants to leave the lignite late. The citizen drives SUV, eats his daily meat, flies short trips, denies climate change.

We as artists worry about what our future will look like. We support the protests for more climate and environmental protection. As artists, we contribute to the world of the future. What do these contributions look like?

The Flood Today

Exhibition, talks, lecture, from 15th March to 10th May 2019 in Group Global 3000, Leuschnerdamm 19, Berlin (Kreuzberg).
Maria Korporal participates with her new video Emergency Call.

The exhibition “Flood Today” shows works of art by 14 artists who examine the connection between human intervention and natural disasters. The influence of humans on the earth grows exponentially and leaves very long traces. Rising sea levels, washed-away fields, muddy villages, sunken houses are the result of climate change, increasing soil sealing, increased rainwater drainage and intensive agriculture.

The multidisciplinary exhibition shows painting, photography, video, installation, collage and performance on the subject of heavy rain. The strong and often disturbing statements show deep personal concern and artistic expressiveness with painting, video, installation, object, collage, showcase, and performance.

Flooded cellars, covered roofs, furniture sinking in the mud. More and more frequently extreme weather events of short duration and high intensity such as heavy rain or storms occur in previously unknown locations and cause millions of damages. Whole fields have been washed away and have silted villages. In the plain, wide areas can quickly become submerged.
Reasons are climate change, increasing surface sealing, increased rainwater drainage through sewer systems, short crop rotations, humus mining and uncovered areas of intensive agriculture. For a long time city planners thought the water was technically manageable. Today, countries, local authorities and citizens are called upon to take precautions. Renaturation measures in waters should make a contribution to flood protection. Rainwater retention basins and flood troughs are set up, the heavy rain risk managed and flood alert levels modeled. Organic farming protects the soil and helps to save rain.

Good Trip, Bad Trip

Driving your car through Berlin’s illuminated streets blasting out rock music at full volume is an exciting experience. It pulls you into a kind of trance. In my video the ride becomes the intoxication of a drug addict. The city scenes are well recognizable at the beginning, but slowly become abstract images: colorful from the start and kaleidoscopic ecstatic (good trip), but then slowly turn cruel and threatening, like a bad oil slick on the surface of the ocean, and the music deteriorates unfailingly (bad trip).
Car driving, city lights – contemporary civilization is everywhere based on a deep addiction to fossil fuel. The global environmental and climate problems related to fuel consumption are well known and undeniable: the earth’s future is in danger. We should recover from our fossil dependency if we don’t want to slide into an eternal bad trip.

The robot Red Rekall, who appears in the beginning and at the end of the video, is a key figure in my Rekall Project, in which small wind-up toy robots guide people around the world and create artificial travel memories. Rekall creates experiences which you undergo, but at the same time observes us – at that point you may realize the absurdity of our existence.

Give Us Back Our Shadows in LICHT, Group Global 3000

Give Us Back Our Shadows © Maria Korporal

The video “Give Us Back Our Shadows” by Maria Korporal will be shown in Berlin from 17.3 to 12.5.2017 as part of the exhibition LICHT (Light) in Group Global 3000.

About the video:
What happens when the sun shines behind a vast curtain of smog? Our shadows become vaguer and when the smog becomes thicker, they may not be visible at all. With the growing air pollution, the sunlight becomes less – it is the darkening of the earth, also called “global dimming” – and we are losing our shadows.
An old Native American legend tells that an insect stole the shadow to those who did not respect nature. Deprived, in this way, of their soul, the men became ill. Only with music and singing they were able to finally get their shadow back and live happily ever after.
The motto “Give us back our shadows!” is the wish that we can clean the air, so that the sun can enlighten us again and we get our shadows back. As in the Indian legend, we have lost our shadows because we did not respect nature. The dance with the animals in the video is a ritual in nature to make the sun seem brighter again and to win our shadows back.

About the exhibition:
Group Global 3000 asks the artists about the light today that is affecting us and nature. We change the natural light through our technology such as glass, buildings, air pollution. We humans emit the artificial light wasted into space. We barely find the darkness. Stars are lost. Insects are dying in the light traps of unsuitable street lamps. We humans waste electricity through outdated lamps and experience pale light from bad energy saving lamps and LEDs. Many buyers do not yet know the new measure for color reproduction RA / CRI> 80 .
19 artists show their positions to the topic with collage, object, installation, photo, painting, graphics, video and performance:
Jully Acuna, Sandra Becker, Marieke Bolhuis, Marzena Brandt, Diego Caglioni, Maks Dannecker, Mary-Noelle Dupuis, Bernd Fuchs, Mariel Gottwick, Stephan Gross and Jörn Birkholz, Maria Korporal, Linda Lenssen, Sonja Mischor,  Korvin Reich, Andreina Vieira dos Santos und Mahsa Asgari,  Peggy Sylopp, Agatha Zbylut.

The Mighty Magic Fruit Machine

Teaser video for
“THE MIGHTY MAGIC FRUIT MACHINE: eat and regener-ate”,
An interactive project, programmed with the Raspberry Pi
© Maria Korporal, 2017
First presentation in Group Global 3000, Berlin, 19.05 – 30.06.2017

NEW! On-line version of the project, click here to play the game!

Deutsch – bitte hier klicken

The visitors of the exhibition are invited to play with a virtual fruit machine, which is projected as a large image on the wall. You can click with the mouse on a button to play. The rotating wheels of this slot machine show fresh fruits alternated by packaging waste of sweets, snacks, lemonade, cigarettes etc.
If you have caught a fresh piece of fruit, you are invited to eat it: with every mouse click you take a bite. Thus, the fruit becomes smaller and smaller until only kernels remain. These cores are rotating again in the carousel of the machine, until they come to a halt in one of the next rounds of the game. Now the visitor has the chance to regenerate the fruit again. With every mouse click, the fruit grows larger until it is fully grown.

The fresh fruit offers a tempting sight. With the virtual consumption of the fruits you almost experience the real enjoyment of fresh fruit, which is enhanced by natural sound effects.
On the one hand, the “regenerating” of the fruits gives a satisfying feeling: here healthy, fresh foods are “grown”. On the other hand, the immediate vicinity of the packaging waste is a disturbing element which makes the eating of the beautiful fruits unappetizing and raises the disturbing question: how natural are the circumstances in which fruits grow?

THE MIGHTY MAGIC FRUIT MACHINE has been presented in the group exhibition “Can you buy pleasure?”, from May 19 to June 30, 2017, in Group Global 3000, Leuschnerdamm 19, Berlin – see website.
